Open Table just published a ranking of these United States’ most scenic restaurants. The folks at Patch, a national website which splinters into neighborhood “patches” from which you can gain semi-local information, wrote about how Open Table ranked 13 California restaurants in that list. Did any Palos Verdes restaurants make the list? Scroll down for the list One did, and one did not which really surprised me. Here’s the list of the 13 that did make it into top 100 most scenic American restaurants. Can you guess which one is missing?
To make the list, a restaurant had to offer “…breath-taking views of nature, cityscapes and travel-worthy landmarks…” Ok, fine. Well about The Admiral Risty? I could they possibly have missed that restaurant? The Admiral Risty is one of my most favorite Palos Verdes restaurants and in fact, in my top 10 for all of the South Bay area. It was built in 1966.
Generations of families have been patrons. Ralph M Wood Jr was the founder. In his 60 year career he opened more than 25 restaurants. The “Risty” is located in the Golden Cove Center; home to another great restaurant (albeit without the views) called Avenue Italy, Trader Joes and other great shops. Mr Wood named the restaurant after his wife, Barbara Ristom Wood. Her college roommates called her “Risty”.

The Admiral Risty is located across the street from the Point Vicente Interpretative Center, one of the most popular whale watching sites during the migration of the whales. From the restaurant, beautiful sunset views are seen; both food and service are top notch. Prices are very reasonable.
Once you visit and dine here, I bet you will be as amazed as I that Open Table left this restaurant off the list. I get it that they had to make a cut off somewhere, but here? No way! How about homes for sale walking distance the The Admiral Risty and the Golden Cove Center? Another iconic restaurant that they missed, although more of a bar food “joint”, is Nelson’s at Terranea. This blog post’s main picture above is taken here at Nelson’s. Do you remember the old TV Show “Seahunt” starring Lloyd Bridges? Nelson’s was named after the character he played.
For those of you that are “Coastal Commission” conscious, you might wonder how in the heck Terranea was able to get this restaurant perched near the bluff. Simple, this was originally the storage facility for old Marine Land my first employer as a 16 year old. The building was grandfathered in.
