Will Proposition 13 be under attack in future elections? You bet. I remember back when it was passed, my parents would not have been able to afford to keep their home had it not passed. Taxes would have sky rocketed. While I understand that many consider Proposition 13 unfair as it puts the burden on folks who are buying homes now (your property tax is basically a little above 1% of your purchase price), the fact is, many of our Seniors who have been in their homes a long time and whose incomes have not gone up at the rate of their home’s market value or who are living on a fixed income, would be forced to sell. This isn’t fair to these folks who have contributed taxes for years and years and it would create such an increase in supply of homes for sale, that with the elimination of Proposition 13, it could precipitate by virtue of massive supply increases in the number of homes for sale, a downturn in the real estate market.
Proposition 13 was also created and passed to put a check on the “drunken sailor” (full apology to drunken sailors) mindset of progressive liberal state legislators who clearly have no concept of frugality and for decades have spent our State into massive debt. The elimination of Proposition 13 would give power hungry legislators carte blanche to write blank checks with funds that do not exist and will allow them to create those funds with new property taxes that will further destroy our real estate market making home ownership costs not only more expensive but will drive down prices as fewer buyers will be able to afford homes.

It is imperative to resist and vote against any measure, regardless of the candy coating that the likes of Jerry Brown will use as “smoke and mirror” tactics. There’s a good article written by Katherine Daigle that helps explain the situation.

HJTA LAUNCHES NEW INITIATIVE GUIDE
Sacramento – The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has launched a new website giving California taxpayers objective information on the initiatives that will appear on the November 8 ballot.
The new website, which can be accessed at www.cainitiatives2016.com or through the rotating banner on the HJTA website, www.hjta.org, offers latest news related to the propositions, brief summaries of each proposal and short descriptions of arguments for and against. The site also offers links to the text of the measures themselves and links to the websites of campaigns for both sides.
“Soon, airwaves will be saturated with millions of dollars in deceptive political advertising” said HJTA President Jon Coupal. “Voters need to examine the measures for themselves and then come to their own conclusions. This new website will be a valuable tool to help people make their decisions based on facts and not misleading political ads.”
The website will be updated regularly as developing news occurs and as additional campaign organizations are launched.
Those interested in HJTA’s Ballot Recommendations for Taxpayers can find these at www.hjta.org, under “Hot Topics.”
