Were you aware of the Palos Verdes Estates Voluntary Camera Registration Program? I wasn’t until I came across an article and was surprised to learn that the system has been in place since 2015.
Many of us these days, as part of our security systems, have cameras in place. And in fact at a recent Neighborhood Watch National Night Out event that my wife and I hosted, we learned that police departments encourage us to not only have cameras which monitor our yards, but cameras that point out to the street too. This makes sense when you think about it as the high definition cameras that exist today can be used to read license plates in addition to providing visual identification of criminals.
The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department encourages both commercial and private owners to register surveillance cameras. This does not allow the police access to your systems but it does alert the Palos Verdes Estates Police department if a crime occurs near your camera that your camera may have recorded the event.
If you would like to learn more about this program, call 310-378-4211 and go here to register your camera http://www.pvestates.org/services/police-department/voluntary-camera-registration
Policy: Registration is voluntary and there is no cost associated with registration. Registering your information does not provide the PVEPD with direct access to your camera. You may delete your registration at any time. All individual’s personal information will be kept confidential by the City unless subject to disclosure by court order. Your information will only be accessed by law enforcement personnel who are investigating a crime in the vicinity of where your camera is located.
You will only be contacted by the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department in the future if there is a criminal incident in the vicinity of your security camera. Police personnel, if necessary, may request a copy of any video captured by your camera, which may assist in the investigation of a crime.
1. Any footage containing or related to criminal activity may be collected by the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department for use as evidence during any stage of a criminal proceeding.
2. Under no circumstances shall registrants construe that they are acting as an agent and/or employee of the City of Palos Verdes Estates and/or the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department through the program.
3. If necessary, the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department will contact you directly, using the information provided on this site, to request the appropriate video surveillance footage.
One of the reasons why Palos Verdes Estates is such a safe place to own any of the Palos Verdes homes is the average response time by the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department. Recent stats for the total response time from call to officer arriving on scene is 2 min 58 sec.
