Why do Miraleste Homes around 6407 Via De Anzar look like they do in Palos Verdes Estates?
In 1921,a real estate developer named E.G. Lewis acquired an option to purchase the 16,000 acre Palos Verdes Peninsula from Mr. Vanderlip for $5 million. By the time Mr. Lewis arrived in Palos Verdes, he already had made and lost a fortune as a mail-order magazine publisher, founder of a bank-by-mail service and builder of a vegetable-dehydration plant. He also dabbled in high-risk mining and oil ventures. He was also reportedly $7 million in debt. The initial development was called the Palos Verdes Project, which would constitute the future City of Palos Verdes Estates and part of the Miraleste area of the present- day City of Rancho Palos Verdes. The community was called Palos Verdes Estates and consisted of approx. 3225 acres. Ninety percent of the development was zoned for single-family residential architecture. As a result of the vision starting the Palos Verdes Project on two ends of the Palos Verdes Peninsula (where Palos Verdes Estates is now and where Miraleste homes are now) then merging together, and the charter of the Palos Verdes Homes Association, Miraleste is under the umbrella of the Palos Verdes Homes Association. The Homes Association, through the Art Jury, still has jurisdiction for aesthetic approval of all architectural plans and modifications of homes in Palos Verdes Estates and the Miraleste portion of Rancho Palos Verdes. The original restrictions on architectural designs also designated three separate districts, with each district having separate guidelines for the architectural style to be used there. For instance, the Malaga Cove area specifically did not allow Tudor style architecture or roofs with sharply sloped roofs, however this style was allowed, to a limited extent, in the Lunada Bay area of the Project (that portion of Lunada Bay known as Margate).
